Ken Waldman, Alaska's Fiddling Poet, visits Slidell - City of Slidell ...

The City of Slidell is proud to host Ken Waldman, Alaska? Fiddling poet, who will be travelling to Slidell for a one week residency. While here, Waldman will host a writing workshop, literary presentation and musical performance on Oct. 24, an ?Art After Hours? performance on Oct. 25, and throughout the week, will conduct an outreach program for senior citizens and arts-in-education programming for Slidell area schools.

An author, writer, poet and fiddler, Waldman draws his inspiration from his Alaskan experiences to produce unique poems, stories, and fiddle tunes. A former college professor with an MFA in Creative Writing, he has had published six full-length poetry collections, a memoir and a children?s book and has released nine CDs that combine old-time Appalachian-style string-band music with original poetry.

Since 1995, Waldman has toured the United States, performing at some of the nation?s leading universities, festivals, arts centers and clubs. Over 400 of his poems and stories have appeared in such magazines as Beloit Poetry Journal, Quarterly West, and Yankee. His most recent books are the memoir, Are You Famous? which chronicles his adventures on tour throughout the U.S., and D is for Dog Team, a sequence of Alaska-set acrostic poems for young readers.

Waldman is also a popular visiting artist in classrooms. Employing both his fiddle and a repertoire of proven writing exercises, he has led workshops in over 180 schools in 31 states nationwide, and has been a guest writer at over 80 colleges and universities. Writer?s Workshop and ?Poetry in Motion? performance at the Slidell Library

On Wednesday, Oct. 24, Waldman will host a free writer?s workshop and presentation from 4 to 5 p.m. at the St. Tammany Parish Public Library Slidell Branch, located at 555 Robert Blvd. ?Four Writing Prompts: The Beginning of Four New Stories or Poems? will arm writers with tools to get over the slump of starting a new story and encourage them to start writing. The workshop is open to writers of all levels and experience. Preregistration is required. The workshop will be followed by a ?Poetry in Motion? performance of music and poetry that?s great entertainment for the whole family. The presentation begins at 6 p.m. and seating is available on a first-come, first-served basis. Admission is free.

?Art After Hours? at the Slidell Cultural Center at City Hall

On Thursday, Oct. 25, the City of Slidell will host an ?Art After Hours? from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Slidell Cultural Center at City Hall, located at 2055 Second Street in Olde Towne. Waldman will perform several poems and fiddle tunes and will be joined by two Louisiana musicians, Hogie Siebert and Chelsea Ellison, for this special presentation.

Don?t miss this?after hours?viewing opportunity to view the ?Accidental Artist? exhibit in the Slidell Cultural Center gallery, featuring the works of Mickey Asche, Kenny Bridges, Keith Dellsperger, Kelly Landrum-Hammell and Milo Stephens. Admission is free.

While in Olde Towne, be sure to visit the East St. Tammany Chamber of Commerce?s ?Business After Hours? hosted by Lowry-Dunham, Case and Vivian Insurance Agency from 5 to 7 p.m. Make a night of it and enjoy both ?After Hour? events.

Waldman?s residency will include arts-in-education performances at Slidell area schools as approved by the St. Tammany Parish School Board. School administrators can contact the city?s Dept. of Cultural & Public Affairs at (985) 646-4375 to request a performance at their school.
