10 Relationship Words That Don't Exist In The English Language ...

love words that don't exists

By Pamela Haag?

Mamihlapinatapei?(Yagan, an indigenous language of Tierra del Fuego): The wordless yet meaningful look shared by two people who desire to initiate something, but are both reluctant to start.

Oh yes, this is an exquisite word, compressing a thrilling and scary relationship moment. It?s that delicious, cusp-y moment of imminent seduction. Neither of you has mustered the courage to make a move, yet. Hands haven?t been placed on knees; you?ve not kissed. But you?ve both conveyed enough to know that it?willhappen soon? very soon.?

Yuanfen(Chinese): A relationship by fate or destiny. This is a complex concept. It draws on principles of predetermination in Chinese culture, which dictate relationships, encounters and affinities, mostly among lovers and friends.

From what I glean, in common usage?yuanfen?means the ?binding force? that links two people together in any relationship.?

But interestingly, ?fate? isn?t the same thing as ?destiny.? Even if lovers are fated to find each other they may not end up together. The proverb, ?have fate without destiny,? describes couples who meet, but who don?t stay together, for whatever reason. It?s interesting, to distinguish in love between the fated and the destined. Romantic comedies, of course, confound the two.

Cafun??(Brazilian Portuguese): The act of tenderly running your fingers through someone?s hair.

Retrouvailles?(French):? The happiness of meeting again after a long time.?

This is such a basic concept, and so familiar to the growing ranks of commuter relationships, or to a relationship of lovers, who see each other only periodically for intense bursts of pleasure. I?m surprised we don?t have any equivalent word for this subset of relationship bliss. It?s a handy one for modern life.

Ilunga?(Bantu): A person who is willing to forgive abuse the first time; tolerate it the second time, but never a third time.

Apparently, in 2004, this word won the award as the world?s most difficult to translate. Although at first, I thought it did have a clear phrase equivalent in English: It?s the ?three strikes and you?re out? policy. But?ilunga?conveys a subtler concept, because the feelings are different with each ?strike.? The word elegantly conveys the?progression?toward intolerance, and the different shades of emotion that we feel at each stop along the way.

Ilunga?captures what I?ve described as the shade of gray complexity in marriages? Not abusive marriages, but marriages that involve infidelity, for example.? We?ve got tolerance, within reason, and we?ve got?gradations of tolerance, and for different reasons. And then, we have our limit. The English language to describe this state of limits and tolerance flattens out the complexity into black and white, or binary code. You put up with it, or you don?t.? You ?stick it out,? or not.

Ilunga?restores the gray scale, where many of us at least occasionally find ourselves in relationships, trying to love imperfect people who?ve failed us and whom we ourselves have failed.

La Douleur Exquise?(French): The heart-wrenching pain of wanting someone you can?t have.

When I came across this word I thought of ?unrequited? love. It?s not quite the same, though. ?Unrequited love? describes a relationship state, but not a state of mind. Unrequited love encompasses the lover who?isn?t?reciprocating, as well as the lover who desires.?La douleur exquise?gets at the emotional heartache, specifically, of being the one whose love is unreciprocated.

Koi No Yokan?(Japanese): The sense upon first meeting a person that the two of you are going to fall into love.?

This is different than ?love at first sight,? since it implies that you might have a sense of imminent love, somewhere down the road, without yet?feeling?it. The term captures the intimation of inevitable love in the future, rather than the instant attraction implied by love at first sight.

Ya?aburnee(Arabic): ?You bury me.? It?s a declaration of one?s hope that they?ll die before another person, because of how difficult it would be to live without them.

The online dictionary that lists this word calls it ?morbid and beautiful.? It?s the ?How Could I Live Without You?? slickly insincere clich? of dating, polished into a more earnest, poetic term.?

Forelsket: (Norwegian):? The euphoria you experience when you?re first falling in love.

This is a wonderful term for that blissful state, when all your senses are acute for the beloved, the pins and needles thrill of the novelty. There?s a phrase in English for this, but it?s clunky. It?s ?New Relationship Energy,? or NRE.

Saudade?(Portuguese): The feeling of longing for someone that you love and is lost. Another linguist describes it as a ?vague and constant desire for something that does not and probably cannot exist.?

It?s interesting that?saudade?accommodates in one word the haunting desire for a lost love, or for an imaginary, impossible, never-to-be-experienced love. Whether the object has been lost or will never exist, it feels the same to the seeker, and leaves her in the same place: ?She has a desire with no future.?Saudade?doesn?t distinguish between a ghost, and a fantasy. Nor do our broken hearts, much of the time.

13th Annual Conference: The Gift That Keeps on Giving | ABIHM

The ABIHM/Scripps 13th Annual Science and Clinical Application of Integrative Holistic Medicine was a tremendous success! 501 attendees enjoyed a fantastic program of clinically useful, evidence oriented information, and left with full hearts and brains.

We began the conference with a historical perspective from ABIHM Founder, Robert Anderson, MD, who told the story of the early days of the ABIHM and the evolution of holistic medicine. The day continued with inspiring lectures from Mimi Guarneri, MD, ABIHM,? Tieraona Low Dog, MD, Alan Gaby, MD, ABIHM, Daniel Friedland, MD, ABIHM, and David Rakel, MD, ABIHM, all of which wove together science with humanism and set the tone for a beautiful week of learning and connection.? We did not forget to enjoy October 31st; our costume party and dance was great fun, and some of our speakers really enjoyed the spirit of Halloween.

We have heard from so many of you expressing your words of awe and appreciation for the experience. One physician, Ami Mavani, MD, ABIHM, said this: ?I wanted to extend my sincere thanks and heartfelt love for what the conference and you offered me. The camaraderie, the spirit and the feeling of belonging left me inspired and wanting more?.congratulations on orchestrating the whole celebration of the spirit of medicine while maintaining the sobriety and science of medicine so flawlessly. It truly was a fabulous conference?

Dr. Danielle Gordon told a wonderful story: ?I really wanted to share something that happened to me minutes after I finished the exam this morning that really warmed my heart and speaks to just how many people were touched this week by your great conference and its message?.I was speaking to one of the hotel employees, who asked if I was one of those doctors at the ?health conference.?? I said I was, and that I just wrote the exam and that it was my first time attending.? She said she?d pray that it went well for me and then told me that this week had changed her life.? She walked by the conference on the first day on her break, and overheard them talking about high cholesterol, fatigue, and obesity, and her ears perked up because she suffered from all of these things! She decided to stop and listen. She was so excited about what was being said and wanted to learn more, so every day on her breaks, she stood or sat in the corner where the computers were charging to ?sit in? on the lecture.? She has in the past week joined a gym with her husband (for the first time EVER) and has stopped microwaving her food in plastic, and emailed all her friends and family to do the same.? She said she also learned about cutting down on sugar and bread to help her with her weight and blood sugar.? She had lots of questions for me too? and was so excited about starting on a healthier path with her family?.?

We were very pleased to launch our online education program and provided a demo to the conference audience. Our educational platform is now open for your exploration at www.abihm.org/education-and-training, where you can purchase a one year subscription to any of the following:

1. Videotaped 12th Annual Conference, The Science and Clinical Application of Integrative Holistic Medicine, 2011, including the popular Bringing Integrative Medicine to Your Practice and Health Care System 6 hour session;

2. Audio and Powerpoint presentations from the 2012 Annual Conference (available by mid-November 2012);

3. Comprehensive E-Guide (previously known as the Curriculum Study Guide) available as an online searchable reference;

4. CME credits associated with the Videotaped Conference (#1 above), up to 34.75 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits approved.

The E-Learning Library is especially useful to physicians who are preparing for an upcoming ABIHM exam, but could not attend the Annual Conference, or for any health practitioner who is seeking? a very strong program for learning about integrative holistic medicine.

The next Annual Conference will be November 3rd-7th, followed by the ABIHM Certification Exam on November 8th, 2013 in St. Petersburg, FL. We are also offering two computer based exams in 2013; one in January and one in May. See www.abihm.org/physicians/board-certification for more information.

Try to remain productive even when working at home | Deluxe Small ...

Try to remain productive even when working at homeDespite our best efforts, extenuating circumstances sometimes force us to have to work from the comfort of our own homes. Maybe a child is sick and your spouse needs to go into the office or, as many on the east coast experienced recently, natural disasters make the commute next to impossible and dangerous.

Though working in your pajamas on the couch doesn't really sound like a bad deal, it's easy to let the day get away from you after you turn on the television, check your social media page, have a long conversation with your son or daughter, along with a bevy of other distractions. The work-life balance can meld into one, which isn't always good for productivity.

So when at home, how is focusing on work possible? There are a number of steps workers at any level can take to ensure that the balance is still intact and that they complete the responsibilities they've been tasked with. Done properly, individuals can both benefit their employers and their families, so everyone wins!

Situate yourself in a quiet environment
According to a recent survey by Wakefield Research for Citrix, many individuals who work from home spend their days getting paid for doing work, but are actually indulging in other activities because they get distracted. For example, the study found that 43 percent of people who have worked from their house have watched a television show or a movie, while 35 percent did chores and 28 percent have cooked meals. Parents are more likely to be guilty of this, the report said.

As such, individuals should consider sitting down to work in an area conducive to work where they won't be interrupted. The kitchen table might work, but if there are little ones running around, maybe a home office or a dining room that is set away from the normal traffic areas could be a good idea. Sitting in bed or lounging on the couch does not often lead to a productive day.

Another option is to head to a local cafe or library, if at all possible. Going to a different environment might be the jumpstart you need to kick off a successful day.

Wear the right clothing
While it's extremely tempting to wear pajamas when you work from home, the added comfortability could make the worker more tired or lax. While the individual should not be uncomfortable in his or her own home, they need to be aware that, at least for the time being, they're in a work environment.

The Citrix survey found that 25 percent of remote workers stay in their PJs all day, while 49 percent exert the effort to put on jeans and a t-shirt. This style could be best for productivity, as it makes your comfortable, but not so much so that you nod off or feel as if it's not a real work day.

Hold yourself accountable
According to Open Forum, all individuals that work from home should set goals and responsibilities for the day that they can't stray from. If need be, they should ask another person, whether it's a family member or friend to check in with them every so often and make sure they're on track.

"You're more likely to be honest if you are talking to them; you can easily lie over email," entrepreneur David Wright told the source, saying that speaking to someone in person or over the phone is a better option. Another choice is to reach out to professionals through networking groups, the source suggested, which can be especially helpful if you don't know someone else who works remotely.?

Alfons and Adrie Kennis
Dutch artists Alfons and Adrie Kennis are twin brothers who work professionally under the studio name of Kennis & Kennis.

They are highly regarded in the field of paleontological reconstruction art, where their paintings and sculptures portray prehistoric mammals and pre-humans.

What delights me about their paintings in particular is the blending of rendered images of the foreground subjects with graphic background elements, and a more daring sense of design and composition than is usually expected within the field.

In addition, their use of texture is just wonderful ? neither slavishly realistic nor deviating from reality. They manage to convey a tactile sense of an animal?s fur or hide, or the skin of proto-humans, within the framework of an expressive technique that has a great deal of visual appeal.

Keep in mind when viewing their work that as artistically vibrant as the paintings are, like all scientific illustration, they must conform to the task of representing their subjects with scientific accuracy.

I-CAR Recognizes OEM Relationships at SEMA

I-CAR held a press conference at last week's SEMA Show, concentrating on its relationship with an increasing number of leading vehicle manufacturers. Nissan/Infiniti, Chrysler and Honda were recognized for recently introducing collision repair network programs that require the industry-recognized I-CAR Gold Class Professionals designation, while 15 vehicle manufacturers include the I-CAR Welding Qualification Series or limited other I-CAR training as a requirement for their network programs.

I-CAR CEO and President John Van Alstyne stated, ?The I-CAR Professional Development Program (PDP) has become the industry standard for knowledge. The PDP was designed to provide the technicians responsible for various and critical phases of the collision repair process the education and knowledge required to perform complete and safe repairs. Additionally, the industry has also discovered the PDP helps businesses improve performance and reduce risk."

James Roach, senior vice president ? parts and service Division of American Honda Motor Company Inc., joined Van Alstyne and discussed Gold Class as an element of the recently launched Honda ProFirst program.

?Honda has a firm commitment to quality, and customer satisfaction is always top of mind," he said. "I-CAR?s PDP and the Gold Class recognition program are the industry standards for knowledge, helping form the foundation for business and technician success through training that provides repairers with knowledge and skills needed to achieve complete repairs and safe repairs.?

The press conference concluded as Elise Quadrozzi, I-CAR board chair, summarized progress made on the PDP since its 2010 launch. She also acknowledged I-CAR?s commitment to assisting the industry as it works toward achieving the first of three ascending PDP knowledge levels, ProLevel 1 being required in 2012.

?I-CAR is committed to expanding its relevance to the collision repair inter-industry. The industry expressed a need for help, and the I-CAR Board agreed that we were well positioned to respond. This initiative is a great example of how we are working to move I-CAR into the future from its historical role as a training provider, with increasing focus on building an education, knowledge and solutions platform of services for the inter-industry.?

Food Network star Sandra Lee has a simple plea about superstorm Sandy recovery efforts ? don't get complacent.

Though government efforts to help those caught in the path of last week's epic storm have been tremendous, as have contributions by corporations and individual donors, Lee fears a fallout from all the goodwill and good deeds ? people outside the worst-hit areas might assume the work is finished.

"Don't think that everybody else is doing the work or it's getting done," Lee ? who also happens to be New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo's live-in girlfriend ? said in a telephone interview Tuesday. "Don't think 'My contribution will be so meaningless and small that it won't matter.' That is not the case."

The storm battered several Northeastern states, but hit New Jersey and the New York metropolitan area particularly hard. Lee has been working the phones to arrange corporate donations for New York's food banks and other charities, including five truckloads of food and emergency supplies from Kmart and Sears.

"We've been reaching out to everyone. It's amazing when CEOs of huge corporations just get on the phone and just get it done," she said. But there also have been disappointments. "There's some that you're just stunned, stunned, stunned, stunned that they don't respond. Where is the leadership at these companies?"

Mostly, however, she has been impressed by how people have pulled together.

"We're all going to be hit by a disaster and a storm and something in our area. It's just a matter of time. You saw it in New Orleans. You're seeing it here," Lee said. "We all have to help one another when that happens. And that is one of the things you're seeing. Right now it's our turn and we're the ones in need. Next time, it will be our turn to help."

Guan Tianglang, a 14-year-old from China, will become the youngest player in history to play in the Masters next April after he won an Asian amateur event to qualify.

Guan won the Asia-Pacific Amateur Championship in Thailand on Sunday, shooting a final-round 71 to win by a stroke.

Guan was the youngest player in the field of this tournament, which began three years ago with the backing of Augusta National Golf Club. The winner automatically qualifies for the year?s first major.

At 14 years, five months and 17 days, Guan will be the youngest player to compete in the Masters by more than two years. Italy?s Matteo Manassero was 16 when he played in 2010, and he is currently then youngest to play in the Masters.

Earlier this year, Guan became the youngest golfer to play in a European Tour event when, at age 13, he played in the China Open.
