If you are old enough, you probably remember Axel and his Dog. Well, this time, Axel is the dog. He is a handsome, rough coated, 5 year old tri-color who came to MWCR with his friend Poochie, as an owner surrender. He had always been an outdoor dog, so when he arrived his coat was very dry and matted; but he has now been groomed and the mats removed, and with time, quality food and an indoor life style, his fur will be gorgeous and shiny before the snow flies.
Axel is initially shy when encountering new people and new situations, but he warms up quickly and is an affectionate, loving boy. He knows his name and will come when called. He will also give you a gentle nudge with his nose, to let you know that you are not done petting him. He doesn't know any commands, but his foster family is working with him, and he is a willing, eager-to-please guy. He is learning to walk on a leash and is making good progress. He rides nicely in a car, but won't hop in voluntarily, so he must be lifted in and out. He is fully house trained and will bark to let you know that he wants to go outside. He is fearful of loud, unfamiliar noises such as the vacuum cleaner.
Axel loves playing with his friend Poochie and his favorite pastime is playing keep away with the other dogs at his foster home. He is curious about the little resident Yorkie and seems to think the small dog is some sort of toy. He doesn't hurt or nip at her, but he does try to push her around with his nose as if she is some sort of furry ball. His former owner said he should not live with cats, and both he and Poochie are way too interested in the cat next door. It is possible that a dog savvy cat with all its claws could teach Axel some respect, but in general, we believe that a feline-free home would be best.
Axel's shyness probably comes from having lived his entire life outdoors without much human interaction. He is friendly and loving once he gets to know you, but he might be best with older children who will give him time to adjust.
Axel is looking for a forever home with a fenced yard, since his shyness could cause him to bolt if something frightens him. He and Poochie are great friends, but they do not need to be adopted together. A cat-free environment would be best, although he would love to have another, playful dog his own size to play keep away with. This loving collie will make a wonderful, devoted companion to any family that is willing to help him over come his shyness and become the happy, self confident boy that he wants to be.
