Google Currents (for Android)

Google can't stand to have users doing anything on other platforms, which is perhaps why it launched a free Flipboard (free, four stars) competitor called Google Currents for Android. After a fairly major update, the Currents app still isn't as social as Flipboard, but it's getting better and delivers a stylish, magazine-like reading experience on Android phones and tablets.

Flipping Through Currents
Users on Google Play have praised a recent update to Currents that changed the app's user interface. A hidden left tray, revealed by swiping to the right from the far left, shows several content categories such as business, news, lifestyle, etc. Each of these include subscriptions from major publications, including ABC News, Huffington Post, Popular Science, Saveur Magazine, Forbes, Fast Company, and others by default.

Select a publication, and you can scroll up and down through the stories. You can also select a category, and swipe left and right through? the various publications for more of an overview. Each category ends with a "breaking news" section, culled from Google News.

Most stories are visually appealing on Currents, with lots of space, pictures, and comfortably sized text. While browsing, categories are demarcated with a large, beautiful picture, while stories carry a headline, an image, and a blurb. Individual stories are paginated with a large image on the top, and you swipe or tap the left side of the screen to move through the story.

Be careful not to swipe too hard in a story, or you'll jump into the next in the publication. This quirk can be irritating, but Currents remembers your spot in each story so you can simply jump back into the one you left. On the plus side, it lets you quickly escape a dull article and jump into another.

Current's navigational paradigm feels a bit problematic at first. The ebook-style format for stories works for articles, and the combination horizontal and vertical scrolling works well for the higher-level view, but together they can be confusing. When I started with the app, I frequently lost my place, and kept panic-mashing the "back" button on the Galaxy S III.? After some getting used to it, though, the app feels quite natural.

Adding new publications is easy in Google Currents. A large plus sign on the top of the left-hand tray launches a new pane filled with recommendations, a search field, and categories with more publications. You can also add RSS feeds by searching for a URL. On the Currents website, you can subscribe to publications from a list, and if you're a publisher, access tools to get your media into the app.

A Flipboard Foe
While Google breaks subscriptions into categories, you add new subscriptions one at a time. This is a critical difference between Currents and Flipboard, which focuses more on adding broad, curated channels than media from publications, and could be a smart move on Google's part as it may give individual publications more exposure.

Some publishers do a better job adapting their content to the Currents platform than others. ABC News, one of the default publications, has beautiful, high-resolution images for each story. PRI, on the other hand, seems to favor low-res images, all of which look awkward and pixelated in Currents.

Flipboard and Currents also diverge sharply with social media. Both allow you to share stories to Twitter, Facebook, and even online storage services like Google Drive. Google, however, has no place for Twitter or Facebook within Currents. Flipboard treats the services like just another feed, so you can see Facebook updates and Twitter @ replies in your curated Flipboard magazine-esque content, for example. If you want familiar voices in your feed, Currents will leave you wanting.

You can also save stories for offline viewing in Google Currents, but that's almost not necessary. When the app starts up, Currents appears to immediately download the text for all subscriptions. I found that despite not being connected to a data network, the full text for stories still appeared, sans images. Flipboard, on the other hand, won't allow you to view anything but headlines without a data connection.

The Benefits of Google
One of the major benefits of Currents is that it's already part of Google. New users simply need to log in with their Google accounts and start reading.

Google attempted to leverage the success of its online RSS aggregator Google Reader into Currents but with mixed success. You can add RSS feeds from Reader by clicking the plus button at the top of the hidden left-hand navigation tray. Scroll all the way down, and you'll see a list of your RSS feeds from Google Reader.

Unfortunately, that's where synergies between the two services end. Read stories don't sync between Reader and Currents, meaning that you're effectively choosing one over the other. What's more, RSS feeds aren't like the purpose-created publications for Currents, and don't look nearly as nice. Some of them are just a paragraph with a link to the story online, and may not even have images.

Google leverages another of its technologies by adding a translate option. In the settings menu, users can designate a secondary language from a preset list from a list of over two dozen options. Users can switch language modes from the options menu, translating everything on the page (where available). Of course, if I am correct in assuming this is powered by Google Translate, who knows how accurate it is.?

Despite strong features, Google Currents for Android doesn't feel as focused or polished as Flipboard.? Google Currents has its own unique design, and is enjoyable to read, with nicely formatted articles from top-tier sources to draw you in. It fits seamlessly into your existing Google footprint (though perhaps not seamlessly enough, in the case of Google Reader). If you're a Flipboard user, and it works for you, stick with it. If you're looking for a new way to read the news on Android, flip through Currents.

Foursquare gives business owners their own app to manage specials, track customer visits

Foursquare just recently tweaked its privacy policy to share more user information with local businesses, and it looks like it's already putting some of that data to use in a new app now that the policy has gone into effect. Launched today for the iPhone and iPod touch, Foursquare for Business is just that -- an app designed for business owners instead of customers. In addition to letting managers upload new photos and refresh their specials regularly, it'll also give them a peek into customer activity at their business (or businesses), including information on check-ins and the ability to keep an eye on their top customers. As Foursquare notes in its privacy policy, though, you can opt out of having that check-in information visible to businesses in the app's privacy settings.

Facebook's mobile ad revenue doubles in fourth quarter

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Facebook Inc doubled its mobile advertising revenue in the fourth quarter, a sign that the No.1 social network is seeing early success in expanding onto handheld devices as more of its users migrate to smartphones and tablets.

Investors want to see evidence that CEO Mark Zuckerberg's 8-year-old company is delivering on promises to develop a full-fledged mobile advertising business, a challenge facing many of today's technology leaders including Google Inc .

But the growth trailed some of Wall Street's most aggressive estimates. Shares of Facebook were down roughly 3 percent at $30.21 in after-hours trading on Wednesday, regaining ground after falling more than 8 percent immediately after the numbers were released.

Mobile revenue estimates among some analysts and investors were unreasonably high, said Sterne, Agee & Leach analyst Arvind Bhatia.

"As a result the stock was set up for disappointment," he said. Overall, he said, Facebook's results were encouraging.

The company's overall advertising business grew at its fastest clip since before its May initial public offering, helping the company's revenue expand 40 percent and surpass Wall Street targets.

Facebook has rolled out a wide variety of new services in recent months as the company seeks to stay ahead in the fast-moving Web market and to convince Wall Street that it can turn its audience of more than 1 billion users into a sustainable business.

Zuckerberg said the company plans to spend heavily to recruit talent in 2013 as the company pushes forward with new product development, particularly "mobile-first" services.

"We aren't operating to maximize our profit this year but we're doing what we think will build the best service and business over the long term," Zuckerberg said during a conference call with analysts on Wednesday.

The strategy makes sense for an Internet company, said Stifel Nicolaus Jordan Rohan. But it will force Wall Street analysts to "ratchet down" their profit expectations.

"The conference call was a bit of a sobering event," said Rohan. "The company advised analysts and investors to expect lower margins, and downplayed the near-term opportunity for revenues from Gifts," Facebook's recently-launched online commerce service.

FUTURE OPPORTUNITIES

Facebook shares, which lost more than half their value following a rocky IPO, have regained ground in recent months as concerns about its mobile ad business and insider selling have eased. Shares have surged roughly 60 percent since mid-November.

Zuckerberg said that recently introduced products such as Gifts, which allows Facebook users to purchase retail goods for their friends, as well as its new social search tool could become important businesses in the future. But in the near term he said that Facebook's advertising efforts will be the core of its business.

The number of monthly active users on the social network reached 1.06 billion at the end of last year, with 618 million daily active users, Facebook said. But much of that growth again came from emerging markets like Asia, rather than the United States or Europe, where revenue per user is several times higher. For instance, average revenue per user is $13.58 for the United States and Canada, but just $2.35 in Asia.

Overall fourth-quarter revenue came to $1.585 billion, up 40 percent versus $1.131 billion a year earlier. Analysts were looking for revenue of $1.53 billion.

Executives said some revenue from its payments business dating back to September 2012 had been booked in the October-December quarter, inflating the number somewhat. Excluding those deferred sales, overall revenue would have been up just 34 percent in the quarter.

But it was the fledgling mobile business that dominated Wednesday's discussion on the call. Finance Chief David Ebersman said Facebook had "basically doubled" mobile ad revenue from the third quarter to the fourth quarter.

"Two quarters ago we really had no mobile revenue," Ebersman told Reuters in an interview. "In the course of a pretty short period of time, we've dramatically ramped up our ability to monetize mobile."

Facebook said net income in the fourth quarter was $64 million, or 3 cents a share, compared to $302 million, or 14 cents a share a year earlier.

Excluding certain items, Facebook said it earned 17 cents a share, compared to the 15 cents a share expected by analysts polled by Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S.

Facebook expects expenses -- excluding stock-based compensation for employees -- to jump 50 percent in 2013, likely outpacing revenue growth. Capital investments may climb to $1.8 billion, up 14 percent from last year's $1.575 billion.

"They're going to have to continue to develop new products, which will cost them," said Bhatia of Sterne, Agee & Leach.

But he said, "the market would be less happy if they were not finding enough opportunities." (Reporting by Alexei Oreskovic; Editing by Phil Berlowitz and Ryan Woo)

Apollo, Metropoulos near deal for Hostess Twinkies: source

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Private equity firms Apollo Global Management LLC and C. Dean Metropoulos & Co are near a deal to buy snack cake brands including Twinkies from bankrupt Hostess Brands Inc, according to a source familiar with the matter.

A deal, part of Hostess's bankruptcy reorganization, is not yet final, said the source, who declined to be identified as the discussions are not public.

The so-called stalking horse bid would be for more than $400 million, according to the Wall Street Journal. It would serve as the baseline offer for the business and could be topped by others at an auction.

Spokesmen for Metropoulos and Apollo were not immediately available to comment. Hostess declined to comment.

Earlier this month, Hostess chose a $390 million offer by Flowers Foods , maker of Tastykake products, as the stalking horse bid for several brands including Wonder bread.

On Monday, Hostess said it chose McKee Foods Corp, maker of Little Debbie snack cakes, as the initial bidder for its Drake's cakes, which include Ring Dings, Yodels and Devil Dogs. It also chose United States Bakery as the lead bidder for four of its smaller bread brands plus bakeries, equipment and depots.

House passes 'no budget, no pay' bill, but is it unconstitutional?

The legislation calls off the debt ceiling fight, for now. 'no budget, no pay' also requires both chambers of Congress to pass a budget resolution by April 15, or forgo their salaries until they do. But the 27th Amendment may stand in the way.

By Peter Grier,?Staff writer / January 23, 2013

The House on Wednesday passed its ?no budget, no pay? bill, which suspends the debt ceiling for three months and calls upon both chambers of Congress to pass a budget resolution for fiscal year 2014 by April 15. Under terms of the legislation, if lawmakers miss that deadline their salaries are withheld. That?s where the ?no pay? part of the thing kicks in.

' + google_ads[0].line2 + '
' + google_ads[0].line3 + '

'; } else if (google_ads.length > 1) { ad_unit += ''; } } document.getElementById("ad_unit").innerHTML += ad_unit; google_adnum += google_ads.length; return; } var google_adnum = 0; google_ad_client = "pub-6743622525202572"; google_ad_output = 'js'; google_max_num_ads = '1'; google_feedback = "on"; google_ad_type = "text"; google_adtest = "on"; google_image_size = '230x105'; google_skip = '0'; // -->

Sounds like a logical way to pressure members of Congress, doesn?t it? If you don?t produce in the private sector, you can lose both pay and your job, after all. By law, Congress is supposed to pass an annual budget resolution. But the Senate, for its part, hasn?t done so in any of the past three years.

?With the passage of this bill today it?s pretty clear that we?re sending a message to the Democrat-controlled Senate: it?s time to do your job,? said House Speaker John Boehner after the legislation?s passage.

But there is one minor problem here: It is quite possible that the ?no pay? part of the bill is unconstitutional.

Why is that? Because of the 27th?Amendment to the Constitution, that?s why. (Submitted to the states in 1789, this amendment was not ratified until 1992, which is an interesting story unto itself.)

Congressional pay is the 27th?s subject. Among other things, it says, ?No law, varying the compensation for the services of the Senators and Representatives, shall take effect, until an election of the Representatives shall have intervened.?

The main point of that wording is to keep lawmakers from voting themselves a fat pay raise and pocketing the cash ASAP. If they did that, they would at least have to face the voters once prior to buying those Bahamian condos. So it?s a check on congressional largesse.

But some constitutional law experts say that the law, as drawn up, works in reverse as well. They point out that taking money out of congressional pockets counts is ?varying? just as much as putting money in would be.

Thus, the no pay provision of the bill ?is (almost certainly) blatantly unconstitutional,? Michael Foomkin, a professor at University of Miami School of Law, on his Discourse.net blog.

If the House had passed this a few days ago, prior to the beginning of the new Congress, that would be OK. But now it can?t take effect until after the 2014 midterms, according to this analysis.

This is not simply a liberal?s way of looking at the wording, either. The conservative group American Majority Action issued a statement on Jan. 18 calling the legislation unconstitutional.

Not surprisingly, House Republican leaders saw this mini-flap coming. They have attempted to defuse it by simply inserting language within the bill stating that the bill passes muster. Section 2 of the legislation says this: ?In order to ensure that this section is carried out in a manner that shall not vary the compensation of Senators or Representatives in violation of the twenty-seventy article of amendment to the Constitution of the United States, the payroll administrator of a House of Congress shall release for payments to Members of that House of Congress any amounts remaining in any escrow account under this section on the last day of the One Hundred Thirteenth Congress.?

In other words, it isn?t really a ?no pay? bill. It?s a ?delayed pay? bill. Even if the Senate doesn?t pass a budget, senators would get their full pay at the end of the session.

Not that most of them need it, since they?re pretty rich as a rule, right?

So it all comes down to the meaning of ?vary.? Some experts say the language is clever and passes muster. ?I suspect this passes Constitutional scrutiny,? writes Jordan Ragusa, associate professor of political science at the College of Charleston, at the Rule 22 congressional politics blog.

Others point out that money has a time value, and delayed payments are in essence smaller. Plus, it?s possible there are members of Congress who live paycheck to paycheck and need the money.

And ?vary,? on the surface, seems to mean ... well, changing the pattern of. Which would seem to cover what?s happening.

In light of this, ?the proposal would thus be unconstitutional,? writes Eugene Volokh, a law professor at the University of California at Los Angeles, on his Volokh Conspiracy blog.

Of course, in the real world this is probably a moot point. What member of Congress is going to sue to get their pay under these circumstances? This is especially true given that 86 House Democrats voted for the bill, as President Obama?s party sees the legislation as a white flag on the part of the GOP, something that allows Congress to skirt the debt limit issue and move on to other fiscal arguments.

I prefer to play male characters, but am willing to play as a female if that's what you would like. Also, it would be nice if you'd be at-least semi-literate, meaning I want at least a paragraph or two in each message.

4 Essential Questions for the New Year | The Elder Law Blog

So, how are the New Years resolutions going?? I heard the fourth week of the year is the hardest since the new resolution is getting a little old and many people don?t continue.? If you haven?t done well with your resolutions, or even if you have, here are four very important questions to ask yourself or to ask your aging parent to start off the new year right.? If you answer ?no? to any of these questions, give us a call.

Four Essential Questions

Elder Law is a broad field with a vast number of issues.? However, it seems that, with very few exceptions, the majority of the consults handled by Elder Law attorneys focus on addressing one or more of four essential questions.

1. Is someone appointed to handle your business if you can?t do it yourself?

The attorneys at our firm strongly believe that a thorough durable power of attorney is the most important estate planning document a person can have, whether you?re 18 or 80.? It is through the durable power of attorney that you nominate someone to handle your business for you in the event you are not able to do so yourself.? The durable power of attorney is the number one tool for avoiding guardianship proceedings in the event of a medical emergency.

2. Are your healthcare documents in order?

We recommend three separate healthcare documents.? First, the healthcare power of attorney, like the durable power of attorney, appoints someone to handle your affairs if you?re unable, except this document deals specifically with healthcare matters.? It is what authorizes doctors and nurses to speak with your representatives about your diagnosis and treatment when you are unable to manage your healthcare on your own, and it is another valuable tool for staying away from guardianship proceedings.? Second, it is wise to execute a HIPAA release form that complies with the federal act governing the release of medical records to ensure your loved ones are not denied access to your medical information.? Third, depending on your wishes regarding end of life care, a living will might be appropriate.? This document puts in writing the wish held by many individuals that they not be left on life preserving machines if they have been diagnosed as being in a permanent vegetative state.? It is not enough that you simply tell your loved ones your opinion on the matter.

3. Do you have an estate plan and does it do what you intend for it to do?

In its most basic sense, an estate plan is simply anything you do to make sure your assets go where you want them to go when you die in the manner in which you want them to go there.? I have emphasized in a number of consultations that having a will does not avoid probate; instead, a will is a set of instructions for the probate judge to follow as your estate passes through the court probate process.? A trust is like a will, in that it contains your instructions for what is to happen after your death, but a trust does not have to go through probate.? I have noted that lifetime deeds can be utilized to avoid probate, but only if they are worded just right ? the absence of a few magic words can throw your estate back into probate.? And we often advise clients of potentially adverse tax consequences associated with lifetime deeds as compared with inheritances received through a will or a trust.

4. Have you done anything to plan for the high costs of long-term care?

The average cost of a nursing home in Arkansas is just under $5,000 per month.? Medicare and private health insurance do not pay for long-term care in a nursing home.? Long-term care insurance is an option if you purchase a policy before any major health issues have been diagnosed, but it can be very expensive.? Help in affording the high costs of long-term care is also available through a couple of government programs.? Veteran?s benefits are available for those who served on active duty during a time of war, or for his or her surviving spouse, if the veteran is deceased.? Medicaid is available to veterans and non-veterans alike.? However, both of these benefits require some planning, because they both include income and asset restrictions.

Many people think that if they have their assets in a trust, those assets can?t be touched by a nursing home or the state if long-term care is needed.? However, if the trust is a standard revocable living trust, nothing could be further from the truth.? Assets in a revocable living trust do count against you for both VA and Medicaid purposes.? On the other hand, there are certain types of specialty trusts you can use for sheltering assets from the high costs of long-term care.? The key is to have accurate information and to plan ahead.

Tour of the Deep Underground Science and Engineering Lab

Just for the heck of it, I'll defend my semantics. Yup... DUSEL was proposed in the early 2000s right after Homestake shutdown. And the key being, using that site "as an underground science laboratory". Prior to that, it was indeed used... "as a goldmine" (with some science on the side). So it indeed seemed like a 'new' proposal.

As the NSF was asking for RFPs at the time, there were three or four contenders (a new mine in Colorado, and an existing mine in MN, and of course Homestake). At the time, Ho

Obama fetes staffers at final inaugural ball

WASHINGTON (AP) ? President Barack Obama is thanking White House aides and his re-election campaign staffers at the final celebration of his inauguration.

Obama told thousands of guests at his staff ball Tuesday night that they represent, in his words, his "deepest hopes for America." He said he knows the nation's future is in good hands.

First lady Michelle Obama, wearing a silver and black ensemble, echoed the president's campaign-year chant of "fired up, ready to go."

Pop icon Lady Gaga and singer Tony Bennett were providing the entertainment.

Proceeds will support a memorial fund for Alex Okrent, a campaign worker who collapsed and died at Obama's campaign headquarters in July.

Customer service will transform your business -- starting today ...

Customer service?exceptional, consistent, customer-centered service?can transform your business more quickly than nearly any other advantage.

Here?s why.

The primary threat to a business today is the perception by customers that all you offer is a replaceable, interchangeable commodity. This hazard stalks your every move: No matter how unbreachable your business?s advantages may appear right now, whether they are advantages of technology, geography, or branding, eventually your business model is going to be knocked off. And, in this era of accelerating change, it will likely happen sooner than you think.

Escape this threat of commoditization by creating enduring, loyal, human relationships with customers. It?s the surest way to escape market obsolescence.

The payoff is huge.

Everything changes when a customer becomes a loyalist. (Or, as the business jargonistas seem to be saying this week, ?when a customer becomes truly engaged.?)

To the truly loyal customer, you are the only shop in the marketplace. All the other brands and all the other vendors don?t even come into focus. Like someone in love, the loyal customer only has eyes for you.

Few businesses realize how valuable customer loyalty is, and even fewer know how to achieve it consistently. But a company of any size can build great wealth and stability through customer loyalty. Businesses with loyal customers grow faster than others when times are good, and they have the most breathing room when times are bad.

At its root, creating loyal customers is about taking the time to learn about your customers individually and then using simple systems to turn that knowledge into enduring business relationships. In doing so, you turn your offering into? a personal relationship ? something far more valuable than a commodity.

GM may stop making Opel cars at Bochum as early as 2015

BERLIN (Reuters) - General Motors may halt vehicle production at a German factory of its ailing Opel division sooner than planned as the U.S. carmaker pushes for more cost cuts at the loss-making brand.

Talks between Opel management and workers at the carmaker's German operations since last June have been undertaken on the basis that the Bochum plant would close no sooner than 2016.

A letter by GM Vice Chairman Stephen Girsky to employees on Tuesday, however, reminded workers that the current labor deal only protects the Bochum factory, in western Germany's industrial heartland, where the Zafira Tourer MPV model is assembled, until January 1, 2015.

"The situation in the entire European (car) market is still catastrophic," Girsky wrote in the letter. "That's a difficult precondition for forthcoming negotiations" with German staff.

He said management would not budge from its plans to close the plant and cut some 3,000 jobs there, regardless of proposals to build the next generation Mokka subcompact SUV at Bochum.

Talks between both sides on the future of Opel's German factories in Bochum, Eisenach, Kaiserslautern and the Ruesselsheim-based headquarters will resume on Tuesday, Girsky said, adding he had called on management to present conclusions in February.

"Our Germany Plan must be completed by then."

Health care for homeless challenging to deliver, but includes ...

TORONTO - It's about 9:30 on an icy-cold January morning, and Dr. Stephen Hwang is greeting his first patient of the day at Seaton House, a 434-bed shelter for homeless men on a quiet street in downtown Toronto.

The man, in his early 50s, has been living at the shelter for about a month after returning home to Canada from a Caribbean island, where he had worked and raised his family for 25 years.

He says he has come home seeking rehabilitation for alcoholism. He remembers the flight to Pearson International Airport, but admits that a subsequent two-week stay in St. Michael's Hospital and his arrival at Seaton House are foggy at best.

Hwang asks if he is still drinking.

"I had a beer the other day, last weekend," the man says.

"Any trouble holding your urine?" prods Hwang.

"I did last week for some reason," but just the once, he insists. The acrid odour emanating from his stained and rumpled clothes in the cramped examination room belies his words. "I'm not normally a coffee drinker, but around here I seem to be up to six cups a day."

Hwang puts the patient through a series of memory and cognitive tests ? he does well on all but those related to immediate recall ? then checks his blood pressure, listens to his heart and palpates his chest and abdomen.

The doctor tells the man his drinking has affected his memory, and it may be reversible if he stops.

"If you keep drinking, you could get worse to the point that essentially you have to be in a nursing home, where you can't even take care of yourself," he says gently but firmly. "You're at the point now where you stop drinking or you essentially pickle your brain."

After some hesitation ? "Let me check my diary," he deadpans ? the man says he'd be willing to speak to an addictions counsellor about entering a detox program. Hwang sets up the appointment for the following week, but it's anyone's guess whether the patient will follow through.

He may choose not to go. He may not remember.

Such are the challenges of providing health care to homeless and marginally housed Canadians across the country.

"So often the chaos in people's lives and the lack of stability in their lives interferes with their ability to maintain regular health care," says Hwang, a general internist who is among a cadre of doctors, nurses, therapists and counsellors at St. Michael's Hospital who specialize in reaching out to vulnerable populations in Toronto's inner city.

"Sometimes the lack of social supports and a lack of family and friends to help them seek care is a major factor."

At nearby St. Mike's, known as Toronto's "Urban Angel," Frank Fournier is also starting his day in the hospital's emergency department.

Since 2010, Fournier has been the community support worker who helps the homeless and others on the economic fringe who come to the ER seeking care.

He is perhaps the ideal person for the delicate job of shepherding sick and often anxious patients through what can be an intimidating experience for those living on the streets or close to it.

Fournier has been where they are.

More than 10 years ago, the IT systems analyst was severely injured after being hit by a car. In the process of recovering, he lost his income and ended up for a few years with no home to call his own.

While living in a shelter, he began volunteering to help others in his situation, then began doing outreach work with Toronto Public Health before being recommended for the position at St. Mike's.

"It would have been hard for me to imagine what being homeless was like before it actually happened to me," concedes Fournier, who says a lot of people who come to the ER recognize him from his previous work.

"So it's a familiar face when they come into the hospital and it's someone they know that's been in the same place that they are in."

Some patients are referred to him by the triage nurse. But often, experience will red-flag a person in the waiting area: they may look agitated or confused; they may seem reticent.

"I will go up and talk to them and assess whether they need my help or if they need anything else," he says. "Sometimes they just need someone to listen to them, someone that they can vent on ... Sometimes it's just a shoulder to cry on.

"They feel isolated and vulnerable because of their economic status or their housing status. So really, you're just giving more of a compassionate touch."

Typically, though, people come through the doors with a specific health issue, one that's often been exacerbated by time on the street.

Many of those health conditions are the same ones that affect other Canadian adults, but they may be more chronic and under-treated among the homeless, notes Jim O'Neill, director of the hospital's inner-city health program.

"So there are respiratory problems, asthma, emphysema. TB is sometimes an issue," he says, as are diabetes and cardiovascular disease. "Mental health and addictions. Broken bones, scrapes, cuts, cellulitis. I mean the list goes on."

The ER at St. Mike's has about 72,000 patient visits a year, and about 17 per cent of them are by the homeless or under-housed. O'Neill estimates that about 30 per cent of these patients are dealing with a mental illness or addiction.

"A lot of our homeless population have foot problems because of exposure," adds Fournier. "You might not have a dry pair of shoes to wear. You might not have anywhere to dry your shoes out or your socks out.

"I have clothing I can give to some of our more needy patients. Some of it's brand new, some are donations," he says, rhyming off the list of items: winter jackets, track suits, clean underwear, socks, boots, gloves and hats.

Besides helping patients get their immediate health problems seen to by ER staff, Fournier asks if they want to shower, when they last ate and if they need a meal, whether they need help paying for transportation when they leave.

"The big thing is to get the patient to almost buy into the system. They may feel reticent at first coming to a hospital. They may think, 'I'm going to get lousy service because I'm homeless or because I'm a drug addict or drug-dependent.'"

Many have felt stigmatized when dealing with the police, financial institutions and previous health providers, he says.

"You know, when you're homeless or under-housed, there's lots of self-esteem issues ... not to mention the anxiety of not knowing where your next meal's coming from, where you're going to be sleeping that night.

"So we try to put those patients at ease and let them know that they're going to be treated with dignity and respect. And more importantly, they're going to be treated like anybody else."

That's all part of the St. Mike's mandate, one that goes back to the hospital's founding in 1892 by the Sisters of St. Joseph, to care for the poor and sick during a diphtheria epidemic that was ravaging the city, says O'Neill.

Today, the inner-city program is connected to a network of agencies that provide a range of services to the disadvantaged in southeast Toronto.

"It's a big problem," says O'Neill, explaining that the program and its many partners try to remove barriers to health care.

In part, that means providing services in non-traditional ways, "bringing the care to the patient rather than expecting people whose lives are chaotic to conform to the norms most office-based or hospital-based services operate under," he says.

It also means organizing a continuum of care, not just for the ailing body part but also in the context of the person's life, stresses O'Neill. "What are they going back to? Can they follow a diet that's important to their medication, for example? Can they afford the medication? Can they take it at the times that it needs to be taken?"

Back at Seaton House, Dr. Stephen Hwang sees a man in his mid-80s with heart disease and a previous stroke, who says he had to return to Toronto from Florida because someone was trying to kill him. Neatly dressed and surprisingly healthy-looking for his age and medical status, he is upset with his fellow shelter residents. "They are always fighting," says the man, gesticulating with his hands to drive his point home.

The man is an example of how difficult it can be to look after this population, says Hwang, noting that the health-care team had tried to hook him up with a heart specialist, lung specialist and neurologist, but he missed all the appointments. His paranoia suggests he likely needs a mental health assessment as well.

"Unless someone navigates the system for him, he would never get care."

Out in the waiting room, Hwang stops to check on a man whose foot is infected, the result of scratching lice bites. He has several such sores on his body. "That's a common problem here," the physician says.

The man complains of a painful molar, but suggests a dentist just needs to pull it out of the socket, plug it in somewhere else and rearrange his teeth.

"He's missing a lot of teeth and the teeth that he does have are in terrible shape," Hwang says later of the resident, who has schizophrenia. "Likely it needs to be extracted, it's hanging and wobbling. But as you heard him say, he has this idea someone can 'rearrange' his teeth and put it back in.

"He really needs to see a dentist and hopefully he will agree to the appropriate treatment."

As he continues to see patients, whose health conditions are many and varied, Hwang agrees that looking after those who have fallen through the economic cracks is "always a challenge. It keeps you on your toes."

Yet, despite the obvious frustrations, Hwang says it is also rewarding helping people who are so much in need.

"I guess the goal is to light a candle rather than curse at the darkness. Even though we might not be able to solve all the problems that are there, we can try to address some of them and make things a bit better."

Build A Better Business With These Internet Marketing Tips | Internet ...

For the skilled practitioner, online marketing can provide a good income. Keep in mind though, you will need to make a good investment of your time if you want to be successful. Use that time wisely, though, and you can get your business into the black a lot faster. Continue reading to gain tips on managing your time while marketing your business.

Read up on marketing studies that show what techniques are and are not effective in webpage design and marketing on the internet in general. The way people see your site can have a big impact on whether they decide to buy from you. These tricks can easily improve your business? profits.

An important way to design subsequent online marketing campaigns is to monitor and measure feedback relating to promotional programs, or concepts you have launched in the past. After you set up an online promotion, keep track of how visitors respond on blogs or other social networking sites. Then add in their advice so that people feel like you?re listening to them.

When making your website, try to make it visibly appealing with as much interesting content as possible. Your main goal is to educate your audience about your product or service in a limited amount of time. Repetitive descriptions and data, facts and information that the customer will find irrelevant or even boring, should be avoided.

You should include a chat section for customers on your website. This really allows you to play to the social context of the Internet. People can actually meet there to chat while checking out what you?re offering. If you can get customers to feel like your business is a group, they will stick around.

Aim to provide people around the globe varying versions of your sites. To do this, translate your website into several different languages so that it is understandable to a much broader range of people. You will get many more customers from different parts of the globe, and you are likely to see an impressive boost in traffic. If a person can read your website in their preferred language, they will feel more comfortable, and you raise the chance that they will place an order with you.

Fast is a great word to use in ad campaigns, as well as in the language around your products. People are frequently more interested in speed than they are in saving money, so be sure to highlight the fact that you get things done quickly!

It should be obvious at this point that Internet marketing can be done in a time-efficient manner. Be wise about how you manage your time, and you should see results in no time.

Acadian Ancestral Home

Lists of names exist regarding the Acadians of Louisbourg and Ile St-Jean who were repatriated to France in the Treaty signed about 1757 at the fall of Louisbourg between Britain and France. Because so many Acadians being deported from Ile St-Jean/Prince Edward Island died when their ships went down at sea, we do not necessarily have all of those names. These Acadian families are being reconstructed by Stephen A. White. What is posted here is the research of Father Patrice Gallant. Father Gallant went France in search of what had happened to the Acadians who had been exiled to France.

First of all, he querried as to what had become of all and any Acadians when they went to France and then what had become of them after that. This, whether they went to France as exiles from Louisbourg and Ile St-Jean, or if they had been expatriated to France at the Treaty of Paris in 1767. What he found was the following information:

1. 1,500 of the Acadians who had been captured in Mines (Grand-Pr?) in 1755 had been sent to the New England Colonies and then onto England where they would have arrived in 1757. After the Treaty of Paris, they went to France and were predominantly settled at Morlaix. In Morlaix there are three parishes: St. Martin, St. Mathieu and St. M?laine. Most of the Acadians were placed especially at St. Martin on Bourret Street. Father Gallant found 86 acts involving the Acadians the first one being a marriage celebrated on 7 November 1763 and the last on 19 January 1780. At St. Mathieu, he found 22 acts from 21 July 1763 to 9 August 1770; there were no Acadian records following that date. At St. M?laine, there were only 4 acts - the first was the baptism of Anastasie-Prudente, daughter of Mathurin Granger and Genevi?ve Terriot, born and privately baptized in England.

2. The second group of Acadians to be exiled were captured at Cap-Sable, that is to say, at Pubnico; taken to Halifax, they were then expedited to Europe on 9 November 1759. In Cherbourge, France, Father Gallant was able to find 246 Acadian records that were of greatest interest; the first, a marriage on 29 May 1759 and the last, a baptism on 8 February 1775.

The Acadians arrived on at least two ships: the first on 30 November 1758 coming from Louisbourg transported the inhabitants of Ile St-Jean; the second ship, on 14 January 1760 came from Halifax where it had departed on 9 November 1759. Two children were born aboard this ship: Louis-Marie Dubois, born 16 December 1759 on the ship that had left from Halifax and disembarked on 14 January 1760 - he had been validly baptized aboard the ship by Joseph Landry. Isidore Viger, born 20 December 1759 on the British transport that arrived 14 January 1760. Another, Joseph-David H?bert was born at Halifax on 27 October 1759, just prior to departure. Recorded in the registers from 15 to 30 January 1760, were 8 baptisms, born either at Cap Sable, at Halifax or aboard ship; one was born 8 December 1758; another was 8 months old. On 26 January 1760, at the end of the same year, more than 40 deaths were recorded of the Acadians who had arrived on this ship.

On the arrival of an earlier shipload of Acadians from Cap-Sable, the first Acadian burial was that of Marie Doucet, daughter of Joseph and Marguerite Moulaison, on 15 February 1759. She was a native of Ste-Anne au Cap Sable, 2-1/2 years of age. That means that this ship would have left Cap Sable about the end of 1758.

3. The third ship to arrive came from Ile St-Jean. Many writers have said that nine vessels deported the Acadians from Ille St-Jean (Prince Edward Island) to France, from the Fall of 1758 to the Spring of 1759. Thus, over 2,200 Acadians would have been deported. According to rameau de St-P?re Une Colonie F?odale, page 224, a ship entered the port of Boulogne, taken there by a storm on 26 December 1758 and it had come from Ile St-Jean with 179 passengers aboard.

On 30 November 1758, another ship arrived at Cherbourg. Many records mention the following: Transferred to France because the English gained control of Louisbourg, living in this city since the St-Andr? of the last year. There was a marriage on 2 June 1759 between L?onard Giraud, surgeon, and Madeleine Boudrot, daughter of deceased Pierre Boudrot and Marie Douaron, deceased during the trip from Louisbourg to France. This ship had remained at sea off Plymouth for three months with its 130 passengers having hardly any food and dying of thirst. At Cherbourg, on 12 August 1760 Joseph Deveau married widow Marie De la Croix who died at Plymouth where her body was thrown into the sea. During 1759, there were 30 Acadian burials at Cherbourg.

However, it is especially St-Malo that received the largest contingency of Acadians who had been deported from Ile St-Jean. Records in France mention 5 British ships. The Acadians sought refuge in the following locations:

  • ST-SERVAN - 700 Acadian records were found here by Father Gallant. It is possible that this is where the greatest number of Acadians could be found. From 31 January 1759 to 27 July of the same year, there were 44 burials. The first burial on 31 January was that of H?l?ne Leblanc, child of Claude and Marie-Jos?phe, 8 years of age having arrived a short time ago from Louisbourg. In the following records, February 1759, the deceased people are said to have arrived on the last transports. The dead were said to have come from either Ile St-Jean or from Louisbourg. The last records on the Acadians were at the end of 1773.
  • ST-ENOGAT - Here all of the Acadians were from Ile St-Jean (Prince Edward Island).
  • ST-SULIAC - There were some records on the Acadians who had been here from May 1759 through 29 October 1773. The following places received a fewer Acadians and those who went to these locations were there for a very short time...
  • PLEURTUIT - Records from 7 August 1759 to 27 May 1767.
  • CHATEAUNEUF - Records here show mostly burials at this location (16) from 15 April 1759 through 13 September 1761.

Journal News Removes Controversial Handgun Permit Information From Website

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. -- A suburban New York newspaper that outraged gun owners by posting the names and addresses of residents with handgun permits removed the information from its website Friday.

The Journal News took down the data just three days after the state enacted a gun control law that included privacy provisions for permit holders.

The provisions were a reaction to interactive maps the newspaper published on LoHud.com that pinpointed thousands of permit holders in Westchester and Rockland counties.

Gun rights activists had immediately complained that permit owners' privacy was being violated. They said the map could guide burglars to their homes while police groups claimed the map could lead ex-convicts to the officers who had put them away.

The addresses of some Journal News staffers were posted online, and threats were called in to the newspaper's offices. The newspaper hired armed guards in response.

Janet Hasson, president and publisher of The Journal News Media Group, said in an emailed statement, "While the new law does not require us to remove the data, we believe that doing so complies with its spirit."

She said the maps had been viewed nearly 1.2 million times since they were published Dec. 23. The newspaper sought the records under the state Freedom of Information Law after the Dec. 14 elementary school shooting in Newtown, Conn., where a gunman who had killed his mother at home killed 20 first-graders and six educators and then committed suicide.

The maps remained online late Friday but could no longer be manipulated to find names and addresses.

State Sen. Greg Ball, the most vocal opponent of the posting, said, "Thank God The Journal News has finally realized the error in their judgment and done the right thing. ... I am proud to have passed legislation keeping The Journal News from doing this ever again."

On Tuesday, as part of a gun control bill, the state Legislature passed and Gov. Andrew Cuomo signed new regulations that give permit holders several ways to opt out of the public record.

Applicants can ask to be exempted because they are police officers or served on criminal-case juries or are victims of domestic violence. They also can just say they might be subjected to harassment.

Hasson said Friday, "One of our core missions as a newspaper is to empower our readers with as much information as possible on the critical issues they face, and guns have certainly become a top issue since the massacre in nearby Newtown, Conn."
