Campaign finance reform forum | Saugerties Times

The Saugerties League of Women Voters will present a forum on election campaign finance reform at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 28 at the Greco Senior Center on Market St. in Saugerties. All are welcome. Strategies to get big money out of politics and the individual voter back in will be examined in a non-partisan manner. Maggie Williams from Move to Amend will speak on the decision that gave corporations the status of individuals with the same right to unfettered free speech. Jessica Wisneski from Citizen Action of New York will address changes in electoral regulations that would eliminate candidates? need to rely on special interests or sweetheart deals with corporate lobbyists to finance their runs for office (unfettered campaign spending in 2012 added up to approximately 6.2 billion dollars). The League of Women Voters is a non-partisan organization whose creed includes the belief than an informed citizenry is the best way to preserve democratic decision-making in the United States.
